Strength Stunts: Ripping Apples

Posted: January 23, 2011 in Strength Stunts, Videos

It came to my attention a while ago that you can rip an apple in half cleanly, if your grip is stern enough and you have your technique down.  I was fascinated by the idea, and had to try.  I’ve been taking apples to work for lunch ever since, and I can rip all but the most obdurate apple at this point.  Below the fold, you’ll be able to see a video of me ripping a large Gala apple.  Enjoy!

    Hey Patrick –

I was looking forward to seeing your technique for apple ripping. But alas the video was blocked because of music content. Damn!

  2. Mike says:

Yes, youtube no problem – music came across too.

Your method for apple riipping was different than I’d imagined. For some reason I though it would be sort of a twisting or shearing motion. It’s amazing that the apple pops into more or less two equal parts.

    • Mike, I initially thought there was twisting involved, too. I can tell you that I tried several ways of twisting the apple, and all I did was hurt my shoulder and get apple debris all over the floor, myself, bystanders…

What my sense of the trick is–the apple has a few lines of cleavage within its tissues, and if you can line them up, grip the apple with enough (even) pressure, and then force it apart, it just snaps. If it’s quiet in the room, you can actually hear the apple give. It’s pretty fun, and if you do it right, you can press the apple back together and barely see the line of breakage.
