Now I’m into Plastics

I’ve searched into a lot of corners of the safety razor market. Inexpensive razors. Expensive razors. Brand new stuff. Old vintage classics.

One of the trends that is afoot at this moment is one in which products hearken back to a particular, if unusual build material. Namely, Bakelite.

The first of the modern plastics, Bakelite became popularized in the 30’s and 40’s. It appeared in any number of things, including razors, at that time.

With wet shaving, all things old and possibly anachronistic are considered interesting, if not desireable. Thus, there are multiple models that are made out of this old material.

I’ve purchased three razors for this test, two of which are made from Bakelite, one that uses a more modern ABS plastic.

They are:

1) The Merkur 45 Bakelite
2) The Fine Ultralight Slant
3) The Phoenix Artisan Accouterments Bakelite Open Comb Slant

I’ll have reviews of each of these razors. In the end, I’ll have a summation article where I attempt to pick a winner, or at least rank them in some fashion. I’ll also attempt to give you the best information I can as to whether or not they are good investments.

Cheers, and happy shaving.

P.S.: Extra points to anyone who caught the Soundgarden reference in the title.
